Basic Criteria to be Considered:

  • If you became a U.S. citizen without obtaining a retention certificate (“Beibehaltungsurkunde”), you have automatically lost your German citizenship by law. But if you lost if after January 1st, 2000, Germany permits renaturalization.

  • If you met the requirements for a Beibehaltungsgenehmigung when you became a U.S. citizen and still meet the requirements today, you may be eligible to file an application to regain your German citizenship.
